The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) and Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) will collaborate with each other to improve the patent competencies of startups.
On February 18, both parties announced that they would provide joint support to startups currently being sponsored by the Center for Creative Economy and Innovation (CCEI) as part of the "IP-R&D Project in Regards to the Common Core Technology for Each Business Field."
"IP-R&D Project in Regards to the Common Core Technology for Each Business Field" (henceforth "IP-R&D for Each Business Field") was newly launched this year to build, share, and spread strategies for patenting new technologies or solving technical difficulties that may apply to a number of enterprises in common. It aims to provide practical support to small and medium-sized enterprises and startups which have been carrying out R&D without the knowledge of relevant patent types due to lack of human and financial resources. Its main goal is to come up with a list of core patent types in each business field and share it with the relevant industry.
More specifically, by analyzing the patents acquired by globally leading enterprises, it thrives to provide Korean startups with a variety of information on new technologies while coming up with a patented technology pool available for use to help latecomers building R&D strategies and setting appropriate R&D goals.
Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) has achieved its desired outcome by supporting individual enterprises through the IP-R&D (Intellectual Property-oriented R&D Strategy Building) project that involves offering a consulting service to enterprises on how to decide on the best R&D directions and strategies so as to acquire widely recognized patents based on the patent analysis.
"IP-R&D for Each Business Field" is designed to expand the scope of support by shifting its focus from individual enterprises to business fields so that more companies can benefit from it.
IP strategy specialists (PM) from Korea Intellectual property Strategy Agency (KISTA), patent analysis institutes, and experts specializing in industry-academia-institute collaboration will participate in "IP-R&D for Each Business Field." A total of KRW 1.05 billion will be used for patent analysis this year and granted to 17 innovation centers across the country after setting appropriate R&D goals. To help achieving these goals set from the "IP-R&D for Each Business Field," up to KRW 4 billion from MSS' budget* will be jointly used.
The major business fields to be primarily considered for support were selected based on a demand survey targeting different innovation centers. These include hydrogen, new energy, and carbon-carbon composites industries in which it is particularly urgent to build an industrial ecosystem and foster startups.
