The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS), along with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) in charge of public data, and the Daejeon Metropolitan City that aims at the special city for the Fourth Industrial Revolution will expand their support for startups based on public data.

On January 16, the MSS (Minister Hong Jong-haak), the MOIS (Minister Kim Boo-kyum), and Daejeon Metropolitan City (Mayor Heo Tae-jeong) opened the “Open Square D Daejeon,” a support center for public data startups at the Center for Creative Economy and Innovation (CCEI) (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST)) in Daejeon. Open Square D is an open space designed to converge creative ideas using public data and also serves as a one-stop support center that helps discover would-be startups that utilizes public data and support the commercialization and establishment of their businesses. The Daejeon center is the fourth kind, following Seoul, Busan, and Gangwon. Daejeon, in particular, is home to INNOPOLIS Daedeok, a key hub for Korea’s science and technology, and the National Information Resources Service, the government’s data center. The city has also produced outstanding talents in science and technology, who will lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution through prominent local universities such as KAIST. Daejeon is expected to create a data-based startup ecosystem that centers on Open Square D Daejeon, thereby contributing not only to the expansion of public data startups in the central region but also to job creation and the revitalization of local economies.

Open Square D Daejeon, located on the 9th floor of CCEI Daejeon with a floor space of 151.85 m2, consists of an area for collaboration and the exchange of ideas and technologies using public data, as well as offices, for resident companies. CCEI Daejeon in collaboration with Open Square D plans to provide on-the-job training and consulting on public data to strengthen startups based on artificial intelligence (AI) and big data. Anyone with an innovate idea of using public data can receive systematic support for commercialization such as the provision of office space and data, training and consulting, and attracting investment.

MSS Minister Hong Jong-haak vowed, “The Ministry of SMEs and Startups will expand startup support programs with an aim to discover and incubate public data-based startups. Just as the MSS cooperates with the MOIS in assisting such startups through Open Square D, we will cultivate CCEI as a hub for local innovation startups that can be utilized not just by the MSS but all government ministries.”
