Minister Hong visted Handmade Shoes Street in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, and expressed the willingness to support marketing for shoemakers such as tenancy in public homeshopping.
□ On June 11 (Monday), Minister of SMEs and Startups Hong Jonghaak visited the Handmade Shoes Street in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. He toured the Joint Handmade Shop on the street and talked with Master Shoemaker Yu Hongsik (Head of Dream Handmade Shoes) and Mr. Yun Jinhun, a young businessman who heads Comfy Shoes. Yu Hongsik is Korea’s first official Master Shoemaker with 56 years of experience. He crafted a pair of shoes for President Moon Jaein (May 2017). And Yun Jihun is a 36-year-old entrepreneur whose love for handmade shoes led him to open his own business in 2017. During the talk, he listened to the issues and difficulties faced by the handmade shoe industry in Seongsu-dong such as rent increase and difficulties with securing new sales channels.

□ The minister was accompanied by the Head of Fashion Goods and Accessories at Public Home Shopping (IM Mall) for this visit, who discussed ways to help the shoemakers in Seongsu-dong sign up as sellers. The MSS plans to commit itself to ensuring that the home shopping platform for SMEs resolves the sales channel issue, which is one of the key difficulties faced by the shoemakers on the street sales channels.

□ Minister Hong reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting microbusinesses and helping young entrepreneurs start their own businesses. The minister added, “The MSS will continue to work toward ensuring the smooth construction of the Metropolitan Specialization Support Center for Micro Entrepreneurs, which is slated to be built in Seongsu-dong.”

Additional Information : The MSS and the Seoul Metropolitan Government are currently working together to build the Metropolitan Specialization Support Center for Micro Entrepreneurs by the end of 2019. The Center is designed to be a multipurpose support center with exhibition and store spaces, common workshops, smart factories, and start-up support functions. It is expected to serve as the control tower for supporting microentrepreneurs in Seoul.
