MSS Hosts the 2017 Korea Leading Market Expo, the Largest Traditional Market Event in Korea

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (“MSS," Vice Minister Su-gyu Choi) celebrated the launch of its 2017 Korea Leading Market EXPO, an event held as a part of the Ministry’s efforts to promote Korean traditional markets. The opening ceremony was held at Jeongseon Stadium in Gangneung, on October 27, 2017, starting at 11:00 a.m. The ceremony was joined by around a thousand attendees, which included merchants and representatives from related organizations.
 
The Korea Leading Market Expo, first held in 2004, is the largest event dedicated to Korean traditional markets and attracts around 160,000 visitors each year.
 
This year's event saw 127 booths set up by 115 markets from across the country and offered a wide selection of spectacles, activities, and eateries.
 
The opening ceremony on the 27th was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister, the MSS Vice Minister, the Gwangwon Vice Governor for Administrative Affairs, and other esteemed guests. The guests joined in celebrating and congratulating the merchants and leading markets that were given honors in recognition for their efforts to promote traditional markets.
 
Mr. Won-il Kim, the head of the Jeju Dongmun Traditional Market Merchants Association, won the highest honor of the day by receiving the Industrial Service Medal. A total of 81 honors were bestowed, including eight Presidential Commendations and eight Prime Minister Commendations, in celebration of the winners’ contributions to the growth of traditional markets in Korea.
