The Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Startups (“MSS”) and Gangwon-do announced their plan to support the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games by creating a venue, in conjunction with leading traditional markets across the country, to introduce foreign visitors to the spectacles, eateries, and activities unique to Korea’s traditional markets.

To provide foreign visitors with opportunities to experience the unique appeal of Korea’s traditional markets and the spectacles, eateries, and activities that characterize them, the MSS and Gangwon-do plan to:

① Establish the “Paldo Market Premium Product Hall” near the Olympic venues (Pyeongchang and Gangneung), where visitors can experience the wide selections of merchandise, foods, and cultural activities offered by Korea’s traditional markets at a single place; Organize the “2018 Food Truck (Cart) Show” with the participation of food vendors (food trucks/carts) across the country; and Offer innovative products developed by young entrepreneurs, as well as finger foods and fusion dishes.

② In addition, the MSS and Gangwon-do plan to: Designate Olympic Hub Markets and Support Markets based on predictions of foreign visitors’ travel routes; Implement various programs for visitors including improvement of foreign language signs, convenience facilities, and packaging designs for key products and development of cultural and experiential contents unique to each market; and Operate tour buses that connect traditional markets to nearby tourist attractions for foreign visitors and assign tourism and interpretation experts to the markets.

③ Moreover, the Ministry and Gangwon-do plan to appoint Olympic Supporters by receiving applications from foreign students studying in Korea and members of multicultural families. The supporters will be tasked with providing foreign visitors with information related to the programs as early as the planning phase.
